Cowboy Burgers with Fried Onions & BBQ Mayo

Is there anything better than a loaded burger in the summertime? I picked up these cowboy burgers stuffed with bacon, jalapeños and cheese from the butcher counter at Sprouts last week and added some fried onions and BBQ mayo for a real 4th of July treat.


I was able to grab all my ingredients for this recipe at Sprouts and love shopping there because of their great selection and quality products (plus the employees are always super helpful and friendly). The next time you have last minute dinner guests, definitely head to their butcher counter for some delicious ‘ready to make’ options like these burgers.




Cowboy Burgers:

Fried Onions:

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • ½ cup flour

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon pepper

  • Vegetable oil for frying

BBQ Mayo:

  • ¼ cup mayonnaise

  • 2 tablespoons BBQ sauce


  1.  To make the BBQ mayo, stir together BBQ sauce and mayonnaise in a small bowl until combined. Refrigerate until ready to use.

  2. To make the fried onions, stir together flour, salt and pepper in a medium mixing bowl. Add the onion slices and toss well to coat. 

  3. Add oil to a heavy saucepan or skillet and heat on medium-high. Add the onions and fry for 2-3 minutes until golden. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate and set aside.

  4. Grill the cowboy burgers over medium heat for 4-6 minutes per side or until burgers are cooked through.

  5. Serve the burgers on buns with BBQ mayo, lettuce, tomato and fried onions.
